This commission was awarded to
the Practice following an RSUA design competition. The
practice won the contest as one of a shortlist of six
practices. Newry and Mourne Council appointed Kennedy
FitzGerald & Associates to develop their design for the
new £20 million facility which is to include swimming
and dry sports facilities and replaces the city’s
current sports centre and swimming pool.
The Competition brief called for an 8-lane 25metre pool
for short-course competition, leisure water and thermal
baths as well as 12 courts of sports halls and a large
fitness area. The Assessor’s report noted the winning
scheme’s strong object quality and elegant external
presence.
In winning the contest the Belfast-based practice saw
off competition from a shortlist of nationally and
internationally acclaimed practices including Heneghan
Peng, FaulknerBrowns, S&P, and Todd Architects. |
