| The University of Strathclyde
commissioned Kennedy FitzGerald & Associates in May 2007
after a two stage competition and interview process.
Following the commission, the brief was increased due
to the agreement between the University of Strathclyde
and the Scottish Funding Council to provide facilities
for the Glasgow City Centre Colleges whose main campus
is on an adjacent site. This is an opportunity to
provide an exemplary sports and learning facility, one
of the largest in the UK. The project provides a
replacement for the University's existing sports centre
as well as providing academic teaching facilities for
the Department of Sports, Culture and the Arts and the
Glasgow City Centre Colleges.
The building includes three swimming pools, a 230
station fitness suite, three sports halls providing a
total of 15 courts, dance studios, ASB type squash
courts, teaching spaces for sport and health as well as
academic delivery of therapy courses and therapy rooms
for clinics and the development of public access to
treatment. The development also includes a Performance
Laboratory for Sports Science teaching and analysis
which is designed for use by the university and college
students and staff. Office accommodation for the
University Departmental Staff is also provided.
The project is located in Central Glasgow on
Cathedral Street and the design has been developed to
enhance the life and activity of that main route into
the main shopping district. The building is located
within the campus and very close to the main student
village - this aspect of the project makes it a very
significant development for the university and the city
of Glasgow. |
